All services related to health are adapting to the new standards set forth by society. On one hand, they need to be planned as spaces for social services, with significant requirements regarding thermal and acoustic comfort as dictated by all the regulations in the sector; on the other hand, they need to comply with the economy standards regarding service quality and cost.
The first peculiarity stems from the fact that a hospital is a permanently occupied centre: 24 hours a day, 365 days a year; therefore, the building needs continuous climate control. Additionally, a hospital houses multiple areas with different functionalities, each with their specific energy requirements. These buildings have very high level energy demands which, in turn, needs to be planned with a high degree of flexibility as, given the constant technological changes in diagnostic tools, these buildings need to be extremely flexible.
